The Brief — A Beloved Local Institution That Needed a Website to Match

Mawsons Ice Cream Parlour has been serving the village of Seascale and the wider West Cumbrian coast since 2009. The business is genuinely distinctive — not a franchise, not a chain, not a shop selling bought-in ice cream. The milk and cream come from their own herd of cows on their own family farm. The gelato is made fresh daily using traditional Italian recipes. The parlour serves breakfast, light lunches, homemade bakes, Belgian waffles, crepes, pancake stacks, and ice cream sundaes — open seven days a week, all year round, in a quiet Victorian seaside village on the edge of the Lake District National Park.

The business also runs a catering arm — an artisan ice cream van that attends weddings, country fairs, fetes, school events, and corporate functions across Cumbria. The brief was to build a website that did justice to the genuine quality and character of the business: the family farm provenance, the handcrafted product, the warm welcome, the breadth of the menu, and the community presence the parlour has built over fifteen years in Seascale.

The client had one additional request that set this project apart from any standard hospitality website build. They wanted a live camera feed from one of their CCTV cameras embedded directly on the home page — so that anyone thinking of visiting could see the parlour in real time before making the trip.

The Live Camera Feed — A Unique Feature That Required Physical Installation

Embedding a live CCTV stream in a website is not a standard request — and delivering it reliably is not a standard solution. The camera feed needed to be live, persistent, and available to any visitor clicking "Start Livestream" on the Mawsons home page at any point during opening hours. That required more than a software integration — it required hardware.

Whamos physically installed a dedicated computer on-site at the Mawsons premises, configured specifically to handle the stream. The machine runs a custom auto-start script that launches the streaming service automatically every time the computer boots up — so that if the machine is ever restarted, whether by a power cut, a system update, or a manual reboot, the stream comes back online without any manual intervention from the Mawsons team. They do not need to remember to start it, log in to a dashboard, or call anyone. The system manages itself.

The live feed is embedded on the Mawsons home page with a "Start Livestream" button that activates the camera view — showing the exterior of the parlour building on Drigg Road in Seascale in real time. For a business in a village that many of its customers travel to specifically, giving people a live view of the premises before they set off is a genuinely useful feature. It is also one that no other ice cream parlour in Cumbria offers.

The Product — Homemade Italian Gelato From Their Own Herd, Every Day

What separates Mawsons from every other ice cream business in West Cumbria is provenance. The milk and cream that goes into the gelato comes from their own herd of cows on their own family farm. The gelato is made fresh every day using traditional Italian recipes — real ingredients, no artificial flavours, no shortcuts. The result is a product with genuine quality credentials that the website needed to communicate clearly and convincingly to anyone who had not yet visited.

The website positions Mawsons as what it actually is: a family food business with real farm-to-cone provenance, not a soft serve parlour or a franchise operation. The "from the cow to the cone" story runs through the site — from the home page hero headline through the About Us section, which explains that Mawsons has been using milk from their own herd since the business opened in 2009 and that the gelato making process is a daily craft, not a commercial production line.

The Our Delights section showcases the range of what Mawsons produces beyond the core ice cream flavours — the sundaes, the specialty creations, the waffles with ice cream, the homemade bakes that come out of the kitchen alongside the gelato. The gallery is photography-led throughout, because the product looks as good as it tastes and the visual quality of the food is itself a sales tool. For a destination parlour in a small Cumbrian village, the website has to do the work of convincing people the journey is worth it — and it does.

The Outcome — A Website That Matches a Business Worth Travelling To

Mawsons Ice Cream Parlour is live at mawsons.uk. The site showcases the full breadth of what the business offers — the gelato, the dessert menu, the lunches and breakfasts, the event catering arm, and the provenance story that makes the product genuinely worth seeking out. The photography-led gallery communicates the quality of the food visually. The Our Delights section gives visitors a reason to plan their order before they arrive.

The live camera feed is the feature that makes this project genuinely unusual in our portfolio. Every other element of the website — the design, the copy, the photography integration, the menu presentation — is excellent hospitality web design. The camera stream is something else entirely: a piece of physical infrastructure that Whamos installed on the Mawsons premises, configured to run automatically and reliably without any ongoing client involvement, embedded into the website so that anyone visiting the site can see the parlour in real time before making the trip from wherever in Cumbria they are starting from.

For a destination business in a small seaside village — where the decision to visit involves a journey, not just a walk down the high street — that live view is a genuinely useful conversion tool. No other ice cream parlour in Cumbria offers it. Mawsons does, because Whamos built it, installed it, and made sure it works every day without fail.
